Maternal Health

Liberia is one of the least safe places in the world to give birth, with a maternal mortality rate of 1072 per 100,000 live births and a neonatal mortality rate of 32 per 1000 live births. Most of these deaths can be prevented with access to health clinics and skilled health care workers during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum.

Refuge Place International was established to change this situation and ensure that mothers are able to realize their right to give birth safely. We are saving the lives of mothers and babies by providing comprehensive maternal health care that is respectful, compassionate and accessible to all.

Our approach to maternal health:

  • Community Health Workers track all pregnant women within the community
  • Antenatal care services and pregnancy vaccinations
  • We engage and employ the local traditional midwives to refer women to the clinic for delivery
  • Safe births with a skilled birth attendant 24/7
  • Postnatal services
  • Family Planning services
  • Post-abortion services

We have demonstrated the success of our integrated approach for improving maternal outcomes. Since opening in 2014, over 1500 babies have been born at RPI and we have had zero maternal deaths. Through our community outreach, and by engaging traditional midwives, who are trusted in the community, we have ensured all births in the catchment area are facility-based with a skilled birth attendant.
