Access to safe drinking water is is vital for ensuring the health of communities. In Liberia over a quarter of the population does not have access to even basic drinking water services. Communities that do no have access to safe drinking water must instead resort to collecting water from open wells and streams.
Drinking unsafe water results in a high rate of water-borne diseases. This has the highest toll on children, with diarrhea being one of the leading causes of child deaths.
The impacts of lack of access to water has implications beyond health. Collection of water from streams is performed by females. When girls have to travel for hours to collect stream water they are unable to attend school.
Refuge Place International constructs hand pumps for clean water at our facility sites. The water is for use not only at the clinics, but are also freely accessible to community members.
